After leaving high school, John began working as a junior clerk at the New South Wales Police Department in Sydney. Over the next five years he worked his way up to become an Inspector's Clerk, i.e. the personal assistant to a Police Inspector in charge of a police division.  As John describes it, "I was like the Radar O'Reilly of the division".

In 1966 at the age of 21, he was sworn in as a Constable and performed uniform duties in the Sydney Metropolitan Area after which he transferred to plain clothes and began training to become a Detective.  He graduated as a designated Detective in 1972.

For the next 7 years he was attached to the Homicide Squad where he worked on several high profile murders, but from time to time, he was seconded to special investigations including as a special investigator at the New South Wales Royal Commission into Drug Trafficking (1978-1979) and then investigating the CIA related drug and money laundering activities of the Nugan Hand Merchant Bank (1980-1983).
